The Australian Museum began research into how invertebrate communities change in response to riparian restoration in 2004. This research is funded by the NSW Environmental Trust.

During the course of this research a clear need was identified to further involve communities in the testing and development of monitoring methods. A major outcome has been the development of habitat monitoring tools suitable for everyone.

BugWise was designed to increase community understanding of the role of invertebrates in the environment, while providing involvement in testing new methods for measuring ecological change.

The Coal and Allied Community Trust agreed to fund the project in August 2004.
